Build your own Solar Panel for your small house

Hand in hand with building a small house, the desire to build your own solar panel system, DIY style, springs forth quite naturally for some. After all, why stop at building a small house when you're trying to save big money?

Saving dollars and achieving a greater independence is fast becoming a necessary force in many of our lives.  Energy costs rising quickly and power losses that come hand in hand with major natural disasters (occuring more regularly than ever before) can leave your household in the lurch and out of pocket.

To my way of thinking with housing and life, if I can deal with the worst possible scenario and recover losses (in power and time) and rebuild with relative ease (and not years of extra debt and waiting around for contractors to get around to re-building my house), it's an alternative I want to know about.

Small houses with DIY solar panels achieve both of these goals. Naturally, there is a great difference between building your own solar panel system for a couple of hundred dollars and the alternative of a couple of thousand dollars (at least) for a commercially produced home solar power systems.

Let's get down to the business of how to build your own solar panel system for home solar power and some facts about solar energy and how it works in a step-by-step way.

DIY Solar Panels : What's The Difference?

The first step in the process is to establish what type of solar cells you will use.

There are three main types :

  • Polychrystalline
  • Monochrystalline
  • Amorphous cells (tougher / economical)
Over time other types of solar cells have been developed - hybrids developed for more efficiency or less fragility, for example.  We'll cover the basics types here.

These each have their own benefits and drawbacks so take a look at the video below and find out how to bring each individual cell together to build your own shiny solar panel.

Home Solar Power/Panel Kits

I'm of the mind that it's good to have an understanding of how and why things work before getting down to taking action but maybe you just want to get started?  Find a home solar panel kit that comes with all the necessary parts ready and waiting to be constructed, complete with full instructions, and you'll very close to becoming your own solar power guru!

Make sure the solar kit you choose is going to meet your home's energy needs.  If it's too small, recharging your mobile phone won't be a problem but you'll find yourself far short of powering the lights in your house or heating hot water.

Apart from being humorous, the videos below - part 1 and part 2 - show a very easy, very quick way to create solar hot water without the need for solar panels, kits or even too much instruction.

This idea will work very well if you live in a warm to hot climate but not so well if you dwell somewhere that is cold most of the year.  It demonstrates how a little thought can make best of the most available resources of sun, a flat surface and a couple of common items from your local hardware store.
